3-on-3 Competition with the Old Man Sports Club of Lorton

3-on-3 Competition with the Old Man Sports Club of Lorton

The Woodbridge Pickleball Club had the honor of hosting The Old Man Sports Club, a club based out of Lorton, VA, for a friendly cross club competition. Jimmy of the Old Man Sports Club reached out to us and was connected to Mike Kline, WPC Board member and Competition Committee Chair.

Together Mike and Jimmy decided on a 3-on-3 team 2-out-of-3 games format: two teams at 3.5 and one team at 4.0. Representing the Woodbridge Pickleball Club was Dave Delevante, Johnny Fagler, Mike Kline, Nick Katsarelis, Jason Shriner, and Jeff Kendrick who are also regular volunteers with the WPC. Mike was surprised to discover the day of that the old men in the Old Man Sports Club were not quite the same age as the lineup he selected for us! This discovery started the competition with a good laugh shared by everyone.

Sadly, Jimmy was unable to play due to an injury so Lisa stepped in as his sub – her dink game was inspiring!

The Woodbridge Pickleball Club came away with 3 wins and the WPC players were presented with gift cards for Fair Winds Brewing Company provided by the Old Man Sports Club. Thank you to Fair Winds Brewing Company for your donation!

After the competition, everyone was encouraged to continue with open play and mixed together for several more games.

If you’re interested in hosting a cross-club event with the Woodbridge Pickleball Club, please use the contact us form. To learn more about the Old Man Sports Club of Lorton, VA visit their website or check out their Instagram account @oldmansportsclub.

WPC and Manassas Park Community Center Social Round Robin

WPC and Manassas Park Community Center Social Round Robin

Today the Woodbridge Pickleball Club and the Manassas Park Community Center pickleball group came together to play a social round robin at Hellwig Park.

Twelve players from each club signed up through Playtime Scheduler. Bonnie Ballentine, USA Pickleball Ambassador, and Nick Katsarelis, Woodbridge Pickleball Club President, welcomed the players with opening remarks which included themes such as building lasting bonds with new friends through pickleball. Players were then given a playing card to assign them their first partner. Each team comprised of one Manassas Park player and one Woodbridge player with the intention of getting every player the chance to meet lots of new people. Games were played for 15 minute rounds and teams rotated to a different court and split giving them a new partner each time.

We were very fortunate that the rain held off for as long as it could – only raining out the last 15 minutes of play. The event was a huge success and everyone had a great time. The games were competitive and exciting and many laughs were shared. We hope to run a cross club event with the MPCC group again soon!

If your club would like to partner up with the Woodbridge Pickleball Club for a cross club event, please email [email protected]. We’d love to hear from you!

Dill Dinkers Pickleball Opening in Manassas Mall

Dill Dinkers Pickleball Opening in Manassas Mall

Prince William County’s First Dedicated Indoor Pickleball Facility Opens in Early 2024

Dill Dinkers, the leading provider of dedicated indoor pickleball in Maryland, has signed a 10-year lease with Spinoso Real Estate Group for its first location, Manassas Mall. The facility will be located at 8300 Sudley Road, Manassas, VA 20109, in spaces A3 and A4, across from Autobahn Indoor Speedway, and is scheduled to open in early 2024.

The 16,485 square foot space will include six regulation-sized pickleball courts with fences and an outdoor surface, bathrooms, private event space, a pro shop, a ball machine, and a state-of-the-art reservation system. The facility will offer clinics, private and semi-private lessons, and leagues. A Director of Pickleball is on staff at each location to ensure the pickleball programming is in line with Dill Dinkers’ high standards.

Dill Dinkers, which recently announced the opening of its fourth location, has exploded on the scene as the leader in dedicated indoor pickleball facilities on the east coast. “Our vision is to spread the joy of pickleball worldwide,” said Will Richards, Co-Founder and CEO.

Will and his wife Denise co-founded Dill Dinkers after they caught the pickleball bug. “We started playing in the summer of 2021 at our local park. We loved playing, but it was impossible to play outside by late fall. By February, we were anxious to play and found an indoor facility in Pennsylvania. We arrived only to realize it was a barn that had been converted into indoor pickleball courts. There was no heat or bathrooms; all the players were bundled in their winter gear, and it was packed! It was clear there was a need for a great dedicated indoor pickleball experience, so we made a plan, and by November of 2022, we opened our first facility in Columbia, Maryland.”

“Opening these facilities is our way to share our love of pickleball with the community and offer a place to play year-round,” explained Denise. “We aspire to create an atmosphere that inspires fun, learning, healthy competition, and lifelong friendships.”

Prince William County was an obvious choice for Virginia’s first Dill Dinkers location. Erika C. Spalding, Chief Marketing Officer for Dill Dinkers, serves on the board of directors for the Prince William Chamber of Commerce as Treasurer and has been an active member of the greater Prince William business community for over 14 years. “Manassas is a vibrant and diverse community rich in opportunity for businesses to thrive. We’ve received incredible support from the Prince William Chamber of Commerce, the Prince William County Department of Economic Development, and local pickleball players. We look forward to sharing the joy of pickleball with the community.”

“We are thrilled to welcome Dill Dinkers Pickleball to Manassas Mall and the Spinoso family. The addition of Dill Dinkers’ dedicated indoor pickleball facility will not only enhance our offerings but also contribute to the vitality of the community.” said Carmen D Spinoso, CEO of Spinoso Real Estate Group, “Their commitment to spreading the joy of pickleball aligns perfectly with our vision, and we look forward to working closely with Dill Dinkers to ensure their success. Together with the Prince William Chamber of Commerce, we are excited to celebrate the grand opening and provide a vibrant and engaging destination for pickleball enthusiasts and shoppers alike.”

Dill Dinkers is proud to partner with JOOLA Pickleball, based in Rockville, MD, as well as the D.C. Pickleball team which is under the Major League Pickleball umbrella.

Dill Dinkers will hold a ribbon cutting and grand opening ceremony after opening the facility. The event will be held in conjunction with the Prince William Chamber of Commerce and will be open to the public. The date and time will be announced on social media.

“There is no question pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in the country. With AnheuserBusch, Mark Cuban, Kevin Durant, and LeBron James all joining the ranks of pickleball team ownership, it’s clear that pickleball is making a great impact on our national and local economy,” said Prince William County Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Robert Sweeney. “We’re proud to have our own dedicated indoor pickleball facility right here in Prince William County, thanks to the Dill Dinkers Pickleball team! They have the experience and management team to deliver a best-in-class experience.”

2023 Summer Pickleball League

2023 Summer Pickleball League

The Competition Committee of the Woodbridge Pickleball Club will be hosting a Summer Pickleball League from June 20th-August 17th.  This will be a “ladder-like” format open to ALL skill levels. The format is such that you will be playing opponents of similar caliber of play each week. The league will be one night per week for 9 weeks. 8 weeks of league play and 1 week for the playoffs. The Women’s League will be played on Tuesday evenings and the Men’s League will be played on Thursday evenings. The cost to play in the league is $20 per person for WPC members and $30 per person for non-members. Each league will be capped at 16 teams. Closing date for signup is June 12th.

Signup by emailing Mike Kline ([email protected]). He will gather the information and we will contact you for payment. Teams should register together with one email providing email and phone information for each player on the team.

League Format

Teams will register as a team and play with the same partner for the duration of the league. Teams will be responsible for providing their own substitute if they have a player, or players, who cannot make a scheduled match.  Please only choose a sub of equal or lesser skill level of the player who cannot play. Subs will not have to pay to play.

Teams will be loosely seeded prior to the start of league play. This is to ensure the best competitive matches possible.  If we have miscalculated our seedings (keep in mind every year the NCAA mis-seeds teams for the national championship tournament), there will be plenty of time in the season for the cream to rise to the top. Each week the matches will be played in a pool play/round robin format. Each week your team will be part of a 4 team pool.  Top 4 teams in one pool, next 4 teams in a second pool, etc. You will play pool play/round robin format with your designated pool for that week.   Your results each week will determine if you move up a court/rung or down a court/rung. Games will be played to 15, win by 2.

So each week you will play three games against three separate teams within your rung.  Each week your team will move up a court (ladder rung), stay at the same court, or move down a court, depending on your results for that week. Results from each week will be based on total wins.  Tiebreakers will be head-to-head if two teams are tied.  If more than two teams are tied, then point differential will be used as the tie breaker.

In order to maximize the use of available courts and to minimize the impact on Open Play, the League will be played at both the AJ Ferlazzo site and Hellwig Park.  Jeff Kendrick will be scheduling the court assignments on the Sunday of each week of play for both leagues.  Jeff will be collecting the scores for the Men’s League and tabulating the standings each week for both leagues.  Candi Linkous will collect the Women’s League scores each week.

Questions about this league can be directed to Jeff Kendrick, Candi Linkous, or Mike Kline.  Jeff can be reached at [email protected].  Candi can be reached at [email protected]. Mike can be reached at [email protected]
